EcologyBound
EcologyBound
is our flagship tour.
Experience
the thrill of discovery - the habitat, wildlife and
peoples of the coastal wetlands, tropical rain forests,
inland lakes and savannah grasslands - all within a
day's drive of the capital.
Arriving
in Ghana you are immediately immersed in equatorial
Africa. On this, your first day - you meet the people of
Ghana, sharing a day on the beach in a mutual
celebration of sun and sea.
Journey
overland to Busua, one of the most pristine beaches in
all of Africa. On the far western border you discover an
experience unique in all of Ghana - the magical land of
the Nzulezo people who live in an isolated village built
over the waters of Lake Tandane. Boarding dugout canoes,
we paddle through a vast marshland - home to orchids, carnivorous
plants, and a haven for a multitude of birds and
dragonflies.
At
Busua you can go deep sea fishing with the master
fishermen of Dixcove - or go horseback riding to a
hilltop castle.
Continuing
along the Gulf of Guinea to Cape Coast, we pass through
plantations of coconut, rubber and palm oil trees,
before arriving at the landmark slave castles restored
by UNESCO. A few short miles down the road lies the
exotic domain of Kakum - an enchanting tropical rain
forest.
Enjoy
an unforgettable lunch at Boatel feeding crocodiles and
watching the antics of weaverbirds. High above the
treetops, explore a thousand-foot aerial walkway -
unique in all of Africa. Go behind the scenes to meet
wildlife conservationists and the shy creatures of the
forest, including parrots, monkeys and antelope.
To
the north we enter the lands of the Ashanti, pausing to
explore one of the richest gold mines in the world and
assess the impact of industry on the environment.
We
visit Bosumtwe, a crater lake formed by a meteor impact.
Enjoy a picnic lunch at beautiful Kintampo Falls.
A
day trip takes us to Brong Ahafo and the monkey
sanctuary at Boabeng/Fiema. The mona, black colobus, and
diana monkeys are worshipped as sacred totems and
receive protection from the villagers.
We
return to Kumasi for a visit to the Royal Manhiya Palace
to meet members of the Ashanti King's Court.
We
return to Accra to explore this large city - a contrast
of old traditions and bold, new architecture.
You
will meet the fishermen of Salaga Beach and even help
them pull in their nets.
Nearby
is the Culture and Artisans' Center where craftsmen
fashion pottery, jewelry, carvings and textiles.
You
have a choice of 11 or 15 day EcologyBound Tours. On the
longer trip, you travel north to Lake Volta, stopping
for lunch at Aburi Botanical Gardens.
After
spending a day on the calm waters of Lake Volta, we
follow the Volta River to the estuary, a birdwatcher's
paradise.
At
Tefle, we visit people who use ancient mining techniques
to extract salt from the earth. We visit the Akwatia
mines where indigenous and industrial diamond mining
exist side by side.
The
people at the Tafo Research Institute will teach you
about cacao and amaze you with what you didn't know
about chocolate!
Our
ecology tour ends with a trip to the Shai Hills Park.
Only a few hours from Accra, these unusual savannah
grasslands and rocky outcrops are ideal habitats for
baboons and antelope.
And
if all this has sparked your curiosity, we recommend our
7 day WildernessBound
extension. Journey north to the Sahel and Mole - the
land of hippo, elephant and leopard.
