WildernessBound
Explore
the far north and meet the people who live there - an
ideal destination for the return visitor.
WildernessBound
forms another of our prestige tour packages, and if
combined with EcologyBound, makes a 3-week package that
provides a complete picture of this small but extremely
rich country.
In
Tamale, you realize the importance of the Volta waterway
as merchants congregate on the shore to exchange goods
and news.
The
landscape has changed, as have the styles of
architecture - from the round homes of Tamale to the
fabulous painted houses of Bolgatanga.
Everywhere
you go in Ghana, the smiles and handshakes are the same.
Artisans of the north specialize in different crafts.
The
leathersmiths of Tamale are famous for their hats,
sandals and purses. The basket weavers of the Bolga
region are famous throughout the land.
Cultural
activities are as diverse as those of the south.
Festivals commemorate history, celebrate harvests and
honor village chiefs.
At
Paga, on the border of Burkina Faso, we meet traditional
priests who worship huge crocodiles. Cattle herds graze
in a pastoral setting amidst giant baobab trees. Cotton
and rice share the land with millet - the staples of the
northern peoples.
Traveling
west from Tamale, we arrive at the Mole Park game
reserve - the crown jewel of Ghana's conservation
efforts. A comfortable air-conditioned lodge serves as
home base between exciting game drives. Go in search of
monkeys, hippos, antelope, birds and even elephants and
leopards. Visit the 600 year-old Larabanga Mosque near
the park entrance, built of mud in the Sudanese mud.
Before
returning to Accra, we travel west to Wa, another center
of Islamic culture. Sample the taste of pitou - a local
beer fermented from millet.
Enter
the ancient palace of the Wa Na, the paramount chief of
the Northwest. Explore colorful markets as the faithful
make their way to prayers at the many historic mosques.
Our
journey ends in Accra - a little more time to find that
special souvenir and take in a few more sights. We hope
you have enjoyed our Photo Journey through Ghana. We
look forward to showing you the real thing.
